Tarot and Astrology: Astrology Structure and Interpretation

(Part of the Tarot and Astrology Series)

Tarot and Astrology A Combination for Cosmic Understanding

Astrology has always carried a bit of a reputation problem. Too often, it gets flattened into pickup-line questions like “What’s your sign?” or reduced to vague horoscopes that could apply just as easily to you, your best friend, or even your cat. And then came the infamous debacle of 2011, when headlines screamed: “Wait, what? All the signs are wrong!”thanks to a planetary wobble. Chaos. Panic. Half the zodiac briefly thought they’d been reassigned.

Of course, nothing actually changed. Western astrology is tied to the seasonal zodiac, so your sign stayed exactly where it belonged. But the drama got people talking, Googling, and double-checking their birth charts. In the end, astrology came out stronger, moving from party trivia to a recognized tool for self-awareness and self-reflection. Turns out the old saying holds true: there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

This post is part of my Tarot and Astrology learning series, where we explore how these two symbolic systems mirror one another. Tarot builds its world with archetypes, numbers, and suits. Astrology works with planets, signs, and houses. Each stands strong on its own. But together? The cards and the cosmos open doors to deeper meaning, connecting the structure of the sky with the story in the spread.

Today, we’re stepping into the world of astrology interpretation and chart reading, to get a better understanding of how Tarot and Astrology can work together. Imagine wandering behind the velvet curtain of the cosmic theater, meeting the cast, the costumes, the stage, and the dialogue that hold it all together.

The Blueprint: The Birth Chart

Astrology begins the night you were born. In the 15th or 16th century, someone might have stepped outside, gazed up at the stars, and carefully sketched the sky by hand. Today, you hop online, plug in your time and place, and voilà. A birth chart of the cosmos arrives neatly in your inbox. Some charts are even beautiful enough to frame as artwork.

Think of the chart as a snapshot of the heavens at your first breath. Planets, signs, and houses are frozen in formation. At first glance, it may look like geometry scribbled in a circle. But really, it’s a blueprint of potential in astrology.

And here’s the key: that blueprint isn’t absolute. Two people can start with the same floor plan and build entirely different homes. Your natal chart reveals tendencies, patterns, and possibilities, not inevitability. For Tarot readers exploring astrology, the chart is like a spread layout waiting for interpretation.

Once you begin decoding the astrology chart, the layers reveal themselves:

  • Planets → the what
  • Signs → the how
  • Houses → the where

The planets are your core energy, the raw forces at play. They show what’s happening inside you or in a situation. Is it drive (Mars)? Connection (Venus)? Structure (Saturn)? Each planet is like a character in the cosmic story, bringing its own motives, moods, and voice.

The zodiac signs act like filters or costumes, coloring how each planet expresses itself. Mars in Aries? Bold, direct, sometimes reckless. Mars in Virgo? Careful, methodical, detail-obsessed. The sign doesn’t change the “what” (Mars is still drive), but it completely shifts the “how” that drive plays out.

The houses ground everything into life arenas. They’re the stage sets. Is Venus in your 5th House? Love shows up in romance, creativity, and play. Venus in the 10th? Connection and charm flow into your career and public reputation. The house shows where in your life the planetary action is spotlighted.

So when you look at a birth chart, you’re essentially asking three questions:

  1. What energy is active? (Planet)
  2. How does it express itself? (Sign)
  3. Where does it land in your life? (House)

That’s the skeleton of astrology interpretation. And Tarot readers will notice the parallel immediately: card → suit → spread position. It’s the same storytelling logic, just written in stars instead of cards.

The Energies: Planets as Archetypes

If astrology is a cosmic system, the planets are its archetypal voices. They answer the “what” of a chart: what energy is present, what force is shaping the scene. Without planets, a chart would be an empty wheel. With them, the astrology story comes alive.

For Tarot and Astrology enthusiasts, planets feel like the Major Arcana archetypes. They are the big energies, the voices that frame the entire reading.

PlanetRoleMeaningTarot Resonance
☉ SunThe central lightVitality, purpose, ego, “main character energy.”The Sun card → illumination, confidence, joy.
☽ MoonThe inner tidesEmotional instincts, habits, safety, subconscious. The High Priestess → intuition, hidden moods.
☿ MercuryThe messengerThought, communication, perception, language. The Magician → words and tools in motion.
♀ VenusThe lover + artistAttraction, beauty, relationships, values. The Empress → nurturing, magnetic energy.
♂ MarsThe warriorDrive, desire, motivation, assertion. The Chariot → momentum, willpower, action.
♃ JupiterThe sageGrowth, faith, opportunity, abundance. The Wheel of Fortune → expansion, luck, cycles.
♄ SaturnThe taskmasterTime, structure, limits, discipline. The Hierophant / World → boundaries that teach wisdom.
♅ UranusThe disruptorRebellion, invention, sudden change. The Tower → shock, awakening, liberation.
♆ NeptuneThe mysticDreams, illusions, spirituality, imagination. The Hanged Man → surrender, perspective.
♇ PlutoThe transformerPower, shadow, death, and rebirth.Death → endings that clear space for new life.

Planetary Groups

  • Personal planets (☉ ☽ ☿ ♀ ♂): Shape daily personality and immediate desires.
  • Social planets (♃ ♄): Influence cultural values, long-term growth, and generational patterns.
  • Outer planets (♅ ♆ ♇): Slow-moving forces that define collective shifts — the “era markers” of an age.

In astrology interpretation, the planets define the what. They are the raw archetypal forces, the characters whose voices drive the story. For Tarot readers, this feels like working with the Major Arcana, powerful, overarching energies that set the stage for everything else in a spread.

The Signatures: Zodiac Signs

If the planets are the raw energies, then the zodiac signs are the aura, the filter, the personal style that shapes how those energies play out. This is the “how” in astrology interpretation.

For Tarot readers exploring the zodiac, the link is clear. A fiery sign feels like Wands, urgent and direct. An earthy sign feels like Pentacles, steady, practical, material. It’s one more way the cards and the stars mirror each other. For Tarot readers, this feels familiar. Both Wands and Pentacles can speak of effort, but Wands burn fast while Pentacles build slowly and deliberately. Planets set the theme; signs decide the style.

Each of the 12 zodiac signs takes its tone from two foundational layers:

The Four Elements

  • Fire: passion, energy, initiative.
  • Earth: stability, structure, grounding.
  • Air: ideas, intellect, communication.
  • Water: emotion, intuition, depth.

The Three Modalities

  • Cardinal: initiating, starting cycles, and leadership.
  • Fixed: sustaining, stabilizing, holding steady.
  • Mutable: adapting, shifting, flexible.

Together, the element + modality create the “signature style” of each sign. For example:

  • Aries (Fire + Cardinal): bold initiator, always first to leap.
  • Taurus (Earth + Fixed): grounded builder, slow but enduring.
  • Gemini (Air + Mutable): adaptable communicator, endlessly curious.
  • Cancer (Water + Cardinal): emotionally-driven initiator, nurturing yet protective.

…and so on through all twelve. Each zodiac sign adds its own interpretive texture to the planets and houses it touches.

This is why astrologers say, “It’s not just your Sun sign.” It’s the combination of planets, signs, and houses woven together. Signs provide the filter, the aura, the unique “how” of the story.

For Tarot and Astrology together, this is where the resonance sharpens. A fiery zodiac influence over a Tarot spread can explain why a reading feels urgent or action-packed. An earthy overlay grounds a reading into the practical and material. It’s one more way the two systems mirror and enhance one another.

Quick Tour Through the 12 Zodiac Signs

Put them together, and you get the zodiac’s 12 signatures. A planet in Aries acts boldly, while the same planet in Virgo acts with precision. Tarot readers will recognize this as the same principle that flavors suits — Wands feel different from Pentacles, even if both speak about effort and growth.

The Domains: The 12 Houses

If planets are energies and signs are signatures, the houses are domains — the arenas of life where everything plays out. They answer the where of a chart, grounding cosmic forces in everyday experience. Here’s a quick tour through all twelve:

The Relationships: Aspects

Energies in astrology never act alone. (And yes, Pluto — you’re still a planet in my book.) The planets are always in motion, sometimes gliding in harmony, sometimes butting heads. Their interactions are called aspects, and they answer the key question of astrology interpretation: how do these energies relate to each other?

Think of aspects as conversations between archetypes. Sometimes it’s a duet, smooth, cooperative, and inspiring. At other times, it’s a cosmic shouting match where neither side is backing down. Without aspects, a birth chart would just be a guest list of planetary characters. With aspects, you get chemistry, conflict, and drama, in other words, an actual story.

The Major Aspects in Astrology (and Tarot Resonance)

  • Conjunction (0°): Fusion
Two planets occupy the same space, blending into one powerhouse. Sometimes this creates a dynamic duo (Sun + Venus = charisma overload). Other times, it’s an awkward roommate situation. In Tarot and Astrology, this is like drawing two Major Arcana cards side by side, their voices merge into one undeniable message.
  • Sextile (60°): Opportunity
Friendly, cooperative, and often subtle. Sextiles are little doors that swing open easily, but you still have to walk through. Think of it like the Two of Wands moment: the chance is there, but you must act on it.
  • Square (90°): Friction
Planets clash, creating tension that demands growth. Uncomfortable? Yes. Productive? Absolutely. Squares are like the Five of Wands; they’re messy, but they sharpen skills and resilience. They’re the grit in the oyster that eventually becomes the pearl.
  • Trine (120°): Flow
This is cosmic harmony. Energy flows with ease, talents come naturally, and gifts arrive without struggle. Beautiful, but easy to coast on. A trine is pure Star card energy, effortless alignment, and blessings waiting to be claimed.
  • Opposition (180°): Polarity
Planets stare each other down from across the chart, pulling you between extremes. The challenge is integration, learning to hold both sides without collapsing. This feels like the Two of Pentacles, balancing in tension until you discover equilibrium.

Why Aspects Matter

Aspects are the threads that tie the chart together. They show whether your Sun cheers on your Moon, whether Saturn is glaring at your Mars, or whether Jupiter is giving your Venus a thumbs-up.

For tarot readers, aspects can be understood like the relationships between cards in a spread. A single card is powerful, but the magic happens in how they connect: how The Tower crosses paths with The Star, or how Strength softens the Devil. Without aspects, you have a pile of symbols. With aspects, you have a story in motion — dynamic, evolving, and alive.

Science Meets Symbolism in Tarot and Astrology

Astrology works because two forces come together: the science of calculation and the symbolism of interpretation. That balance is what makes it such a perfect companion to Tarot card reading.

A birth chart calculation without symbolism is just math. A Tarot deck without interpretation is just ink on cardstock. But together, the chart and the spread become living stories.

The Science: Precision in Calculation

Before an astrologer says a word about your chart, the math has to be correct. Degrees, minutes, planetary motion, all carefully tracked with astronomical accuracy. Miss the math, and the chart collapses like a poorly built Tarot spread.

But don’t panic. You don’t need to be an ancient Babylonian astronomer with a sundial, quill, and infinite patience. Humans have been calculating the skies for thousands of years, and now software does the heavy lifting. Type in your birth chart details, and voilà: a neat, accurate astrology chart (sometimes pretty enough to hang on your wall). You can go completely math-free and still dive into astrology interpretation.

For Tarot readers, the parallel is clear: you don’t need to hand-paint your own deck to read the cards. The structure is already there; the art lies in interpretation.

The Symbolism: Breathing Life into the Data

If the math side would impress your physics teacher, the symbolism is what would make your psychology teacher give a slow clap. (Bonus points if it comes with a journaling prompt.) Numbers become archetypes; coordinates blossom into metaphors.

A Sun at 18° Cancer isn’t just a dot on a wheel. It’s the Nurturer archetype, flavored by the Moon, steeped in Water, resonant with belonging and emotional connection. The chart gives you the map, but the symbolism gives you the myth, the mirror, the meaning.

Tarot works the same way. The Ten of Swords isn’t just “ten plus swords.” It’s the lived story of endings, release, and eventual recovery. Both Tarot and Astrology remind us that numbers don’t stay numbers for long — they transform into narrative.

Case Study: Tarot and Astrology in Action

One of my favorite quick reading techniques is the three-card snapshot of “where I am and where I’m heading.” Think of it like a Polaroid moment (no need to shake). It’s just a slice of the now, captured without filters or extra angles. I love it because you can do it anywhere: at the coffee table, on a park bench, or while waiting for your tea to steep.

This time, I decided to layer Tarot and Astrology practice together in real time. Instead of my full chart, I looked at the astrology of the moment and stamped it directly onto my cards. The spread became a dialogue between the deck and the sky.

When you try it yourself, Tarot tells you what is happening. Astrology colors it with what kind of “what.” That blend creates cosmic storytelling in action.

The Question

“What’s the snapshot of my now, what’s the lesson, and where am I heading?”

Here’s what I pulled:

Judgment of Swords
Using Tarot and Astrology to better understand a reading through the use of Sun Sign, Moon Sign, and Ascendant Sign.
Moon in Leo

The Lesson (Judgement + Moon in Leo) reminds me that I don’t do “holding” well. My instinct is always to do. But sometimes the real lesson is to pause, to be, even when I don’t feel like my brightest self. The Leo Moon says. You don’t have to perform constantly. Sometimes showing up with warmth is enough.

Present → Eight of Swords
Sun in Virgo

For me, The Present (Eight of Swords + Sun in Virgo) feels like a holding pattern. Life transitions are forcing me to wait, and waiting isn’t my strong suit. Virgo Sun sharpens the sense of perfectionism. I’m not building, creating, or moving forward the way I’d like, so it feels like failure.

Outcome → Four of Wands Rx
Leo Rising

The Outcome (Four of Wands Rx + Leo Rising) reassures me that no disaster is looming. On the inside, I may be struggling with this holding pattern. But on the outside, I’ll look resilient and bright (Leo Rising flare intact) even while inwardly I wrestle with patience. The reversal shows the skill I’m building: enduring the pause, strengthening a muscle I’ve never liked using.

How to Try It Yourself

  • Then overlay the astrology: Sun, Moon, and Rising. Tarot tells you what. Astrology colors it with what kind of what.
  • Lay three cards left to right: Lesson, Present, Outcome.
  • If you want to add a twist, arrange them in a triangle: Present at the top, Lesson to the left, and Outcome to the right.
  • First, read the Tarot cards on their own. Get the headline, the verb, the mood.

The Practical Benefits of Astrology

For all its poetry, astrology is also surprisingly practical. It’s not just a sky full of symbols — it’s a map you can actually use in daily life. An astrology chart can:

  • Help you name your strengths and quirks.
  • Reveal the habits you lean on, as well as the blind spots you’d rather ignore.
  • Give you a sense of timing, showing when doors are opening wide and when it might be wiser to pause and wait.
  • Color your relationships, revealing both harmony and friction (and why those dynamics matter).
  • Even sync with your wellness, reminding you when it’s time to expand, when it’s time to rest, and when it’s time to release.

In other words, astrology interpretation doesn’t just live in the stars. It lands in your everyday life. And Tarot readings do the same. Put them together, and you don’t just get answers, you get a double lens for guidance.

And here’s the magic: Tarot does this as well. Tarot gives you the scene, the snapshot of what’s happening now. Astrology reveals the season, the broader context that surrounds the scene. Together, Tarot and Astrology double your lens, sharpening your perspective and expanding your possibilities.

Astrology’s Living Architecture

Astrology isn’t just party trivia or meme fodder. It’s a layered system of planets, zodiac signs, houses, and aspects interlocking like gears in a cosmic clock. The math keeps it grounded; the symbolism makes it breathe.

This is where Tarot and Astrology insights clasp hands. Tarot spreads tell the scene, while astrology charts reveal the season. Together, they create a symbolic architecture of cards and cosmos, one that reflects both the heavens and the inner self.

When I look at my own chart — Libra Sun, Libra Moon, Scorpio Rising — I see this architecture at work. Diplomat at heart, artist in spirit, presence edged with more gravity than expected. That’s what astrology interpretation does: it takes a cosmic blueprint and turns it into a living story.

From Fate to Mirror

Astrology, like Tarot, isn’t about what the stars make you. It’s about what they mirror in you. Once you learn to read that mirror, the question shifts. It’s no longer “What’s my fate?” but rather: “What am I going to create with this cosmic script?”

Bridge Back to Tarot

Astrology maps the heavens with precision and depth. Tarot sits beside it, a deck of archetypes ready to dialogue with the stars. If this post gave you the architecture of astrology, the companion post in this series explores the architecture of the cards.
