THE TAROT STUDIES GLOSSARY · A–Z

The Letter Y

Explore Tarot terms beginning with Y, including year cards, year-ahead spreads, yes-or-no readings, yellow symbolism, Yetzirah, Yin and Yang, and two meanings of Yod.

Year-Ahead Spread

A Tarot layout used to explore the coming year, often with one card for each month plus an overall theme. The cards describe developing possibilities and areas of attention rather than guaranteed monthly events.

Year Card

A Tarot card calculated or drawn to represent a broad theme for a calendar year or personal birthday year. Some methods use birth-date numerology, while others use a direct draw. The card offers a reflective focus rather than a fixed forecast.

Related terms: birth card, numerology, annual theme

Yellow

A color often associated with sunlight, awareness, clarity, intellect, optimism, and visibility. In Rider-Waite-Smith imagery, yellow skies and backgrounds can create a sense of illumination or exposed consciousness, though meaning depends on the full scene.

Subject: Symbols and Imagery
Related terms: color symbolism, sunlight, illumination

Yes-or-No Spread

A Tarot layout designed to provide a direct answer to a closed question. Methods may use card orientation, assigned values, elemental balance, or a comparison of supporting and challenging cards. The result is most useful when followed by context about why and what choices remain.

Related terms: closed question, decision-making spread, agency

Yetzirah

The World of Formation in Kabbalistic teaching. Western Hermetic systems may connect Yetzirah with Air, the suit of Swords, and a particular level of the Tree of Life. Assignments should be understood within the specific tradition being studied.

Related terms: Kabbalah, Four Worlds, Air

Yin and Yang

Interdependent principles from Chinese philosophy describing complementary, changing forces rather than simple opposites. Some modern readers use them as a comparison for receptive and active energies, but they should not be reduced to generic gender labels or treated as original Tarot correspondences.

Subject: Correspondences
Related terms: polarity, Chinese philosophy, balance

Yod (Astrological Aspect)

An astrological configuration formed by two quincunx aspects joined by a sextile, creating a narrow triangle sometimes called the Finger of God. Readers who combine Tarot and astrology may use it as a lens for adjustment, pressure, or redirected purpose.

Subject: Correspondences
Related terms: astrology, quincunx, aspect pattern

Yod (Hebrew Letter)

The tenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet and the first letter of the Tetragrammaton. Hermetic Tarot systems connect Yod with symbolic ideas such as a point, seed, Fire, or the beginning of manifestation. It comes from a sacred linguistic context.
