THE TAROT STUDIES GLOSSARY · A–Z

The Letter N

Explore Tarot terms beginning with N, including narrative reading, Nines, numerology, natal charts, New Moon readings, and non-predictive approaches.

Narrative Reading

An approach that interprets a spread as a developing story rather than a collection of separate cards. Figures, actions, settings, positions, and repeated symbols help reveal what is beginning, changing, conflicting, or moving toward resolution.

Related terms: visual narrative, card relationships, sequence

Natal Chart

An astrological chart calculated for a person’s birth time and place. Some readers compare Tarot cards with natal planets, signs, or houses to explore personal themes. This is an added correspondence system rather than part of basic Tarot structure.

Subject: Correspondences
Related terms: astrology, birth chart, houses

Negative Card

An informal label for a card perceived as difficult, frightening, or unwelcome. Tarot Studies avoids treating any card as purely negative; challenging imagery may describe loss, conflict, fear, limits, or necessary change while still offering context and choices.

Related terms: challenging card, shadow expression, reframing

Neptune

A planet associated in modern astrology with imagination, spirituality, compassion, dreams, ideals, illusion, and blurred boundaries. Tarot correspondence systems may use Neptune to add a reflective layer involving inspiration or uncertainty.

Subject: Correspondences
Related terms: astrology, dreams, planetary correspondence

Neutral Card

A card whose influence is not automatically helpful or difficult and becomes clearer through its position, neighboring cards, and the question. In practice, most Tarot cards can function neutrally when they describe a condition rather than judge it.

Related terms: context, modifier, card relationship

New Moon Reading

A Tarot reading aligned with the beginning of a lunar cycle. It commonly explores intention, potential, preparation, and what a person wants to begin cultivating before the Moon grows toward fullness.

Subject: Correspondences
Related terms: lunar cycle, intention, Moon phase reading

Nigredo

The blackening stage in alchemical symbolism, associated with breakdown, decomposition, uncertainty, and the beginning of transformation. In Tarot study, it may provide a lens for cards depicting endings, darkness, or the dissolution of an old form.

Subject: Correspondences
Related terms: alchemy, transformation, shadow

Nine

A number associated in Tarot numerology with attainment, intensity, wisdom, and approaching completion. Nines show what has developed through the suit before the cycle reaches Ten, including both accomplishment and the strain of carrying something nearly to its conclusion.

Subject: Correspondences
Related terms: numerology, numbered card, Minor Arcana

Non-Predictive Reading

A Tarot reading focused on reflection, understanding, choices, or possible responses rather than forecasting a fixed future. It may explore the current pattern and likely direction while keeping agency and changing circumstances visible.

Subject: Reading Language
Related terms: reflective Tarot, agency, possible outcome

Numbered Card

One of the forty Minor Arcana cards numbered Ace through Ten across the four suits. Also called pip cards, they combine the qualities of their number, suit, imagery, and position within the suit’s developing sequence.

Numerical Progression

The development of a suit from Ace through Ten. Reading the cards as a sequence shows how an element begins, takes form, encounters challenges, matures, and reaches completion or transition.

Subject: Correspondences

Numerological Reduction

The practice of adding the digits of a larger number until a smaller number is reached. Tarot readers may use reduction to compare cards or calculate personal cards, although methods differ and master numbers may be retained in some systems.

Subject: Correspondences

Numerology

The study of symbolic meanings associated with numbers. In Tarot, numerology helps connect cards across suits and trace developmental patterns from Ace through Ten, while the card’s imagery and suit show how the number is expressed.
